  Minister's Message
Prof. Edward B. Rugumayo
Minister of Tourism, Trade & Industry

On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism Trade and Industry, I wish to congratulate the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) on the occasion of the 9th Uganda International Trade Fair 2001(UGITF'01). Let me take this opportunity to welcome all foreign participants and visitors and wish them a happy stay in Uganda. I am optimistic that your participation in UGITF'01 will lead to the promotion of technology, investment and business exchange among our countries.

The Government of Uganda has built a strong track record for economic reform and promotion of private sector participation in economic activities. We have been consistent in strongly encouraging both domestic and foreign private investment in virtually all-economic spheres. We have built an attractive investment climate by improving the legal frameworks, reducing bureaucracy and stabilizing the economy thereby stimulating high growth rates. We are keen to see that the private sector takes the lead in exploiting our vast economic potential to ensure sustainable development.

Today, our country offers a dynamic economic environment with a small but fast growing market. In addition, our central location in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) makes us an ideal springboard for firms wishing to service a number of markets directly bordering our country. Further to this, the recent launch of the East African Community (EAC) and the strengthening of COMESA has enhanced the prospects of Uganda becoming a hub for servicing Eastern, Central and Southern Africa markets.
